If an entry looks wrong
This site does not hold the underlying record and cannot change it. Every name, class, county and coordinate here is reproduced from the U.S. Geological Survey's Geographic Names Information System exactly as published, and a correction has to be made at the source before it can appear here.
Changes to the federal register are proposed through the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. If a name, location or classification is wrong, that is where it is corrected.
If you think this site has reproduced the federal entry incorrectly — something that does not match the GNIS release — that is our error and we want to hear about it. Include the page address and the field.
Access, closures and conditions
This site publishes the federal register of place names. It does not know whether a road is open, whether a trail is passable, whether a permit is needed, or what anything costs, and it does not guess. For that, contact the agency that manages the land — the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, or the relevant state parks department.
A place listed here is not an invitation
Many entries in the federal register are on private land, in closed areas, or in terrain that is dangerous to reach. Listing a place is a statement that the federal government records its name and position, and nothing more.
